Brass Drawer Pulls

It might sound like a slightly boring topic, but there’s a lot to be said about brass drawer pulls and how they can brighten up a set of draws (or even an entire room, if used properly).

There are basically 4 (similar, but essentially different) reasons why someone might want to buy a new set of brass drawer pulls. The first is that they’ve just purchased a new set of drawers, kitchen cabinets or something that has drawers on it that need drawer pulls to open. In this case you’ll most likely want to add your own personal touch and choose your very own set of brass drawer pulls to add to it. The second reason is the you already own any (or all) of these things, and that you have just repainted them or done something new to them so that your existing set of drawer pulls no longer matches the cabinet or drawer set that they are attached to. The third reason is that you’ve damaged your existing brass drawer pulls, and the fourth reason is that you simply fancied a change (and why the hell not!?)

Whatever reason you have for wanting some new brass drawer pulls, it is important to remember that you don’t really even need a reason anymore due to the low prices that these things can be bought at and the ease that you can buy them (due to them being extremely accessible since they can be bought in almost any DIY shop and because they can be found online at a number of well trusted stores).

Okay, so you’ve gone out and chosen a lovely few brass drawer pulls (that are either all the same or a few different types) and you want to put them onto your cabinet or drawer. The first thing you need to do is to remove the old ones (if there are any on there – if not then great) and remove any debris (such as old screws or splinters) that they may have left behind. Once this is done you need to wipe down the workspace (i.e. the front of the drawer or cabinet) so that it is smooth (so your brass drawer pulls can fix in properly and so that they’ll attach in as flat as possible). For this job I recommend using sugar soap as it’s great for clearing all of the crud off and leaving a nice surface for your drawer pulls.

If you’re going to paint your item, now is the time to do so as you don’t want to be getting paint anywhere near your brass drawer pulls as brass pulls are notoriously difficult to get paint off of (especially given their often rounded shape that makes them difficult to wipe). However you choose to paint is up to you (or if indeed at all), but just make sure (like with the cleaning) that you leave a perfectly flat surface for your brass drawer pulls to fit against, and that you don’t clog up the screw holes with paint (doing so isn’t disastrous, however, since you can always re-screw them with enough elbow grease).
