Garage Door Handles

A garage door is typically an extremely large, bulky piece of metal that acts as a blocker between the outside and the inside of your garage (and potentially your home, if the two are interlinked). For this reason, safety is a priority. Luckily, most garage door handles make it extremely difficult for thieves to break into your garage (as well as the fact that these doors can be quite heavy so lifting them or removing them is very difficult) due to the strong locks that are combined with them. Note that more garage doors don’t open how most interior house doors do in your home (where they swivel on a hinge). Instead, they open by swivelling vertically (instead of horizontally) which means that your garage door handles will have to be made and positioned in such a way that you have a good enough grip to be able to pull them up (since you essentially need to yank the door upwards and carry its whole weight).

That being said, many people these days suffer from bad backs or are unable to bend down too far and lift heavy objects. Because of this, you also need to have your garage door handles placed so that you don’t need to bend down in order to reach them and so that you won’t strain yourself when you attempt to lift them up (many doors actually have a wire attached to a pulley to make opening the door a lot easier as the pulley carries the initial momentum of the door and helps you slide it upwards). Most garage door handles actually have a lot more work and thought go into making them than you might think, and the design and placement of garage door handles is key to their success of failure within the market place.

While many people these days don’t even bother with garage door handles at all (because they use electronic or motorised garage door openers) they still play a part in modern society, and are a good back up option to have in case you electronic opener fails (it’s never a good idea to rely too heavily on modern technology or anything that uses electricity and could fail easily).

Whenever purchasing a new set of garage door handles (or just one, if you only have one garage as many people do) always make sure to take into account the actual weight of the garage door and what you’ll need to be lifting. Luckily, since most doors now are actually fitted with spring loaded pulley systems (that I previously mentioned) that help you open the door, the actual weight of opening it with your garage door handles is a lot less than it should be (or what you garage door handle is lifting). You might think that you’ll never have to worry about this as your door is electric and it opens itself. If this is the case, always keep the manual for your electronic opener in a place where you know it will be and always have the essential spare parts for it in a place that you can easily access.
